The future supply of petroleum coke does not look promising. On the one hand, with the rise of electric vehicles, China’s new-energy vehicle market is experiencing rapid growth, gradually squeezing out petroleum consumption. As a result, traditional oil companies are cutting back on capital expenditures, and the slowing growth rate of oil production could constrain the supply of petroleum coke. On the other hand, due to the implementation of the “dual-carbon” policy aimed at reducing carbon emission intensity, some refining and chemical enterprises have delayed the construction of new coking units in favor of hydrogenation units, which also affects the supply of petroleum coke.

Prices of petroleum coke and calcined coke have risen.

Currently, the mainstream prices in the calcined coke market remain stable. Some low-sulfur calcined coke producers report that, due to recent increases in raw material prices, downstream buyers have become less hesitant, and the overall transaction atmosphere is gradually picking up. Meanwhile, some medium- and high-sulfur calcined coke producers note that as raw material prices have begun to rebound one after another, their current shipment volumes have improved compared to earlier periods, and prices have risen accordingly—by 100 yuan per ton.

Coupled with relatively high raw material prices, companies’ production capacities remain generally underutilized.

This week’s commentary (April 11–14): The domestic market price of cathode carbon blocks remained stable this week. Currently, epidemic prevention and control measures across various regions have led to widespread restrictions on logistics and transportation, resulting in sluggish shipments from cathode carbon block manufacturers and a slight accumulation of inventories. Most companies are focusing on fulfilling earlier orders and depleting existing stockpiles. Meanwhile, low-sulfur coke prices have risen again, while calcined anthracite coal and coal tar pitch have seen modest increases, putting continued pressure on costs and intensifying production cost burdens for cathode manufacturers. Due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic, some companies have temporarily suspended accepting new orders, placing significant operational pressure on these businesses. However, the accelerated resumption of downstream production is boosting demand for cathode carbon blocks. As of April 14, 2022, the average market price of cathode carbon blocks stood at 15,250 yuan per ton, unchanged from the previous week, with a fluctuation rate of 0.00%.
