Since 2022, the negative electrode material sector has attracted widespread attention, drawing in players from all sectors who are eagerly entering the market. Enthusiasm remains undiminished, and competition within this field is intensifying. From January to December 2022, China’s output of negative electrode materials exceeded 1.2 million tons, and newly planned production capacity has been experiencing an explosive growth trend. Currently, the cumulative planned capacity for negative electrode materials exceeds 15 million tons, with an associated additional output value of approximately 600 billion yuan. However, due to the substantial expansion of negative electrode material capacity in earlier stages, a large volume of graphitization capacity will come online in 2023, causing graphitization prices to enter a downward phase—from a peak of 28,000 yuan per ton down to the current level of 13,000 yuan per ton, representing a 53% decline compared to prices in the first half of 2022. What will be the future trend of graphitization? Will prices fall to the cost line? With recent continuous declines in raw material prices, coupled with policies such as “dual carbon” initiatives and power restrictions in Inner Mongolia, and as leading manufacturers’ integrated negative electrode projects gradually come on stream, the self-sufficiency rate of graphitization is steadily increasing, and graphitization processing fees continue to decline. Can this trend provide cost support for negative electrode materials in the future? How will the competitive landscape of the negative electrode market evolve in 2023? Under the impact of the national dual-control policy on energy consumption, how can enterprises reduce costs and improve efficiency? In 2022, China's petroleum coke prices generally followed a trend of “rising first and then falling.” From January to December, China’s total output of petroleum coke was approximately 27.84 million tons, while the cumulative total imports reached about 14.50 million tons—a rise of roughly 26.783 million tons compared to the previous year, representing a year-on-year increase of 34.59%. In 2022, actual demand for petroleum coke showed steady growth, reaching around 38.7025 million tons. In terms of consumption structure, carbon materials used in aluminum production remained the largest single demand sector. Although the share of negative electrode materials is relatively small, it saw the most significant increase. With the rapid development of new materials and new energy industries, this trend is expected to become even more pronounced in the future. According to customs data, the United States remains China’s largest trading partner for petroleum coke imports. However, the current international economic situation remains complex and severe, marked by a series of negative factors such as the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and high inflation. Coupled with the potential for a swift tightening of monetary policies by developed economies led by the Federal Reserve, these factors will place considerable pressure on the global economy. What impact will future industry developments have on the supply and demand of petroleum coke? How will the international situation affect the import and export of petroleum coke—both positively and negatively? What changes are occurring in the quality requirements for petroleum coke? And how will price trends evolve?
In 2022, China's graphite electrode consumption showed an overall upward trend, with an average annual compound growth rate of 9.86%. By December, consumption reached 743,200 tons. Since 2022, the graphite electrode market has faced a series of challenges, including sustained increases in raw material prices, repeated production restrictions imposed on downstream steel mills due to environmental measures for the Winter Olympics, the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the global economy, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and insufficient operating rates of electric arc furnaces. Despite these headwinds, overall production capacity has continued to grow, output has remained stable yet rising, and market concentration has further increased, with the market share of leading major manufacturers reaching approximately 75%. The steel industry is expected to reach peak carbon emissions by 2025, and electric arc furnace steelmaking plays a crucial role in achieving carbon neutrality. Currently, steel mills' profit margins have significantly narrowed, and losses among steel companies have intensified. This sluggish state is unlikely to change in the short term. Downstream demand for graphite electrodes remains largely unchanged, and the export market has seen a noticeable decline due to adverse factors such as the pandemic, high shipping costs, and anti-dumping measures. However, as steel companies undergo deep restructuring and gradually strengthen their control over electric arc furnace steel prices, coupled with supportive policies aimed at "stabilizing the economy and ensuring growth," promoting "green steel," and advancing "carbon neutrality," there are positive expectations for improved steel mill operations. What are the planned structural adjustments for the graphite electrode market in 2023? How will outdated and inefficient production capacity be phased out? How long will the current situation of weak supply and demand persist? Can graphite electrodes usher in their next golden period of development?
From January to December 2022, China’s total exports of prebaked anodes reached 1.9824 million tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 18.45%. The industry’s prosperity continues to remain robust. Affected by policies such as dual control over energy consumption, power restrictions and production limits, and the cancellation of electricity price subsidies in Inner Mongolia, production in industries like primary aluminum has been constrained. In some regions, the addition of new primary aluminum and alumina capacity has been strictly prohibited. So, how will the market prices of prebaked anodes, cathodes, and primary aluminum evolve in 2023? And what will be the extent of the impact of electricity price changes on the industry?
In 2022, China’s production of needle coke was approximately 930,000 tons, with a production capacity of about 2.83 million tons. From 2023 to 2024, China plans to add new needle coke production capacities of 305,342,000 tons per year respectively. It is expected that by 2024, China’s needle coke production capacity will reach 3.9373 million tons per year. The emerging industries of carbon-based new materials, new energy, and electric furnace steelmaking are now facing new opportunities. Needle coke serves as a crucial raw material for these industries. What kind of performance can we expect from needle coke in the future? Will the overall market be able to climb to a new level?
Moreover, global industrial and supply chains are undergoing profound reshaping. Cross-border investments are trending toward nearshoring, localization, and regionalization, intensifying competition among countries to attract foreign investment. Compared with the international economic situation, China’s economy has generally maintained stable operations and continues to show an expansionary trend.
