How can we better reduce electrode consumption in electric furnaces and improve the quality of graphite electrodes?

Graphite electrodes are primarily used as conductive materials in smelting electric furnaces. Compared with other conductive materials, graphite electrodes have several key advantages: they exhibit excellent electrical and thermal conductivity as well as remarkable toughness, enabling them to withstand high-current surges without softening or melting even at high temperatures. For this reason, they are widely employed in high-temperature electric furnaces for steelmaking. In electric arc furnaces used for steelmaking, graphite electrodes serve as the conductive material; through arc discharge, they transfer thermal energy to the charge, thereby melting scrap steel.

The 200,000-ton-per-year flexible needle coke unit constructed by China National Chemical Corporation No. 9 Company for Liaoning Baolai Bioenergy Co., Ltd. was successfully commissioned on its first attempt and began producing qualified products at midnight on January 1, 2021.

Graphite Industry: With rising raw material costs and tight supply, graphite electrodes will continue to increase in price.

Currently, the graphite electrode market is experiencing slight fluctuations in production. First, some enterprises have reduced their output by around 20% to 50% due to the implementation of emission reduction measures. In certain regions, some companies have temporarily suspended specific processes such as pressing, owing to weather conditions and other factors. Second, several enterprises that had previously halted production have resumed operations, and some companies have increased their output to meet earlier orders. Overall, China’s graphite electrode utilization rate saw a modest increase in November; however, compared with the same period last year, the overall utilization rate of the graphite electrode market remains at a relatively low to medium level.

Since the first batch of trailers loaded with graphene production-line equipment rolled into the industrial park of Chongqing Qikai Vehicle Manufacturing Co., Ltd. In carbon production, the raw materials commonly used can be categorized into two main types: solid carbonaceous materials and binders and impregnating agents. Solid carbonaceous materials include petroleum coke, pitch coke, metallurgical coke, anthracite coal, natural graphite, and graphite scrap, among others. Binders and impregnating agents encompass coal tar pitch, coal tar, anthracene oil, and synthetic resins, among others. In addition, certain auxiliary materials such as quartz sand, metallurgical coke pellets, and coke fines are also employed in the production process. For the manufacture of certain specialty carbons and graphite products (such as carbon fibers, activated carbon, pyrolytic carbon, pyrolytic graphite, and glassy carbon), other specialized raw materials are utilized.

The prices of petroleum coke from major refineries have been raised, while the prices of some local petroleum cokes have seen a pullback.

This week, the petroleum coke market saw active trading activity, with prices generally rising. Some independent refineries experienced a pullback in coking coal prices. Petroleum coke production remains low, while downstream demand remains stable. Sinopec raised its petroleum coke prices by 20-80 yuan per ton. PetroChina increased its petroleum coke prices by 50-100 yuan per ton in some regions. CNOOC also raised its petroleum coke prices by 50-150 yuan per ton in certain areas. Among independent refineries, prices for higher-priced petroleum coke fell sharply by 10-80 yuan per ton, while prices for some other grades continued to rise by 20-100 yuan per ton.
