On January 17, at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), the UAE-based international renewable energy company Masdar announced the preferred contractor and supplier for the world’s first large-scale, “all-weather” photovoltaic energy storage gigawatt project.
Among them CATL As the preferred supplier of battery energy storage systems (BESS), we will provide 19 GWh of energy storage systems leveraging advanced TENER technology to ensure exceptional energy density and reliability.
Larsen & Toubro and China Electric Engineering Corporation Selected as the preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project, responsible for the engineering construction and delivery of the entire project.
The project, located in Abu Dhabi, covers an area of 90 square kilometers and has a total investment of approximately US$6 billion. It is expected to begin operations in 2027. The project will include a 5.2 GW (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, complemented by a 19 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This setup will enable the dispatch of renewable energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it the world’s largest combined solar and battery energy storage system (BESS). The system will provide up to 1 gigawatt of baseload power generated from renewable sources on a daily basis.
In 2024, CATL signed several major deals. In April, Taiko New Energy and CATL signed a long-term procurement agreement on-site for liquid-cooled energy storage batteries with a total capacity of 350 MWh, targeted at the Japanese market.
In October, Spanish renewable energy developer Grenergy successfully signed a large-scale supply contract with CATL. Under the contract, CATL will provide EnerX battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 1.25 GWh—comprising more than 7,100 modules—for Grenergy’s Phase IV Oasis de Atacama project in Chile.
