The Origin of the May Day Labor Day
International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, is a national holiday observed in more than 80 countries around the world. It falls on May 1st each year and is a shared celebration for working people worldwide.
In July 1889, the Second International, led by Engels, held a congress in Paris. At the congress, a resolution was adopted stipulating that on May 1, 1890, workers around the world would hold a march, and it was decided to designate May 1 as International Labor Day.
After the founding of New China, in December 1949, the Administrative Council of the Central People's Government designated May 1 as the official Labor Day, granting the entire country a day off. Every year on this day, the whole nation celebrates with great joy. People don their festive attire and gather enthusiastically in parks, theaters, and squares to participate in various celebratory rallies, cultural and sports events, and entertainment activities. Moreover, workers who have made outstanding contributions are honored and recognized.
