Analysis of the Chinese Pre-baked Anode Industry’s Industrial Chain, Supply and Demand, Import and Export, and Future Development Trends Last Year
Prebaked anodes are carbon products and constitute a major, indispensable raw material in the electrolytic aluminum production process. Classified by manufacturing process, prebaked anodes are a type of carbon product—specifically, a fine-grained subclass of carbon anodes. From an application perspective, prebaked anodes are used exclusively as anode materials in the electrolytic cells during aluminum smelting; they serve both as conductors and participate in electrochemical reactions, thereby undergoing consumption. The quality of prebaked anodes significantly influences the quality of the resulting primary aluminum.

Summary of the Domestic Petroleum Coke Market Demand in 2021
The primary downstream consumption sectors for China’s petroleum coke products continue to be concentrated in several key areas: pre-baked anodes, fuel, carbon additives, silicon (including metallurgical silicon and silicon carbide), and graphite electrodes. Among these, the pre-baked anode sector consistently ranks first in terms of consumption volume. In recent years, both the electrolytic aluminum market and the production of silicon-based products have maintained high profit margins, fueling strong purchasing enthusiasm among downstream enterprises and serving as the main driving force behind the growth in petroleum coke consumption.

Today is Laba Festival—after Laba, it’s almost New Year! China Carbon Net wishes you a “porridge-filled” year ahead!
The Laba Festival falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month each year. The main custom associated with this festival is “drinking Laba porridge.” The Laba Festival is one of Buddhism’s grandest holidays. According to Buddhist records, before attaining enlightenment, Shakyamuni had practiced asceticism for many years, reducing his body to skin and bones. Realizing that asceticism was not the ultimate path to liberation, he decided to abandon it. At that moment, he encountered a shepherdess who offered him milk porridge. After consuming it, his strength was restored, and he sat in meditation beneath the Bodhi tree. On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, he attained enlightenment. To commemorate this event, Buddhists hold religious ceremonies on this day, preparing porridge from rice and fruits to offer to the Buddha. As recorded in Wu Zimu’s “Menglianglu” from the Southern Song Dynasty: “On the eighth day of this month, temples refer to it as the Laba Festival.”

A Review of the Domestic Graphite Electrode Market in 2021 and Outlook for 2022
In the first quarter of 2021, graphite electrode prices in China showed a relatively strong upward trend, primarily driven by high raw material prices, which continued to push graphite electrode prices higher. Enterprises increased production pressure, and the market demonstrated a strong willingness to maintain prices. Moreover, supply of smaller- and medium-sized graphite electrodes remained tight, further supporting the overall upward movement in graphite electrode prices.
2021 Negative Electrode Material Market Summary: Standing at the Core of the High-Speed Train of New Energy
In previous years, the prices of negative-electrode materials were relatively stable and unremarkable. But this year, as the new-energy sector has surged ahead, negative-electrode materials have followed closely behind, experiencing a rapid and dramatic price increase. Price adjustments in April, July, September, and November ranged from 500 to 1,000 yuan per ton. Downstream battery manufacturers have been struggling under mounting pressure: on one hand, lithium salt—particularly lithium carbonate—has reached new record highs; on the other, electrolyte prices are rising swiftly. As a result, many battery cell companies have jointly announced price hikes. Even with simultaneous price increases across all materials, the shortage of automotive chips has failed to slow down the momentum of the new-energy transition. Several automakers have reported record-high production and sales volumes. With global demand for new-energy vehicles continuing to soar, driven by robust demand both in overseas markets and the domestic Chinese market, leading global power-battery companies—including CATL, LG Chem, Panasonic, SKI, CALB, BYD, and Guoxuan High-Tech—are actively preparing to expand production capacity, thereby accelerating the pace of negative-electrode-material expansion. Despite their modest and unassuming nature—negative-electrode materials typically account for only 7%–15% of battery costs and represent about half the volume of positive-electrode materials—they remain quietly committed to technological innovation. They continue to refine and stabilize existing technologies such as artificial graphite, develop advanced silicon-based negative electrodes for the 4680 format, and explore the potential of sodium-ion batteries yet to be fully realized.
