Information Summary:

Under the impact of dual-carbon power restrictions, graphite processing capacity has been affected by 40% to 50%, gradually impacting downstream lithium-battery production. In the second half of this year, various provinces and cities across China have introduced policies related to dual control of energy consumption. Graphite processing capacity is mainly concentrated in regions such as Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, and Guangxi; among these, Inner Mongolia faces a particularly severe electricity supply situation.

Under the impact of dual-carbon power restrictions, graphite processing capacity has been affected by 40% to 50%, gradually impacting downstream lithium-battery production. In the second half of this year, various provinces and cities across China introduced policies related to dual control of energy consumption. Graphite calcination capacity is concentrated mainly in regions such as Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, and Guangxi. Among these, Inner Mongolia faces a severe electricity supply situation. Moreover, the graphite calcination process consumes an extremely high amount of electricity—around 15,000 kilowatt-hours. Starting in September, local negative-electrode companies received clear notices of power restrictions, and subsequently began reducing production one after another. Currently, graphite calcination capacity nationwide... The impact on production capacity remains around 30% to 40%. Moreover, many graphite expansion projects have also experienced delays or temporary suspensions. The graphitization process is crucial for the production of synthetic graphite (negative electrode material). As downstream demand for lithium batteries continues to rise month by month, Negative-electrode graphitization capacity is becoming increasingly important for battery companies.

Artificial graphite production capacity is constrained, and domestic technology for natural graphite remains relatively underdeveloped; therefore, demand for natural graphite may see a modest increase after doping. In 2020, the total domestic shipment volume of negative electrode materials was 365,000 tons, with artificial graphite accounting for approximately 84% of the usage. Natural graphite The usage ratio is approximately 16%. The primary domestic supplier of natural graphite is Betray, while other companies have relatively smaller production capacities. Although natural graphite anode materials offer advantages over synthetic graphite anode materials—such as higher capacity and lower cost—they also suffer from drawbacks including low initial Coulombic efficiency, poor cycling performance, low consistency, and poor compatibility with electrolytes. As a result, they generally require modification before being used in batteries. Modification techniques include surface oxidation, surface coating, and elemental doping. For domestic enterprises, the technology for synthetic graphite is more mature, and switching technologies at the battery end is relatively difficult. Since natural and synthetic graphite are both used as anode materials, other key components—including the electrolyte—must also be adapted accordingly. In the short term, demand for natural graphite will not experience significant fluctuations. Currently, the expansion plans of domestic companies are primarily focused on synthetic graphite production; there are no expansion plans yet for natural graphite. However, the market is currently experiencing... Natural graphite doped with synthetic graphite For products used together, if the proportion of natural graphite added is increased, its usage will also increase accordingly. Moreover, the production lines for natural graphite and synthetic graphite can be switched between each other; therefore, Natural graphite demand is expected to grow by 10% to 20% next year.
