Recently, the European energy market has sounded an alert about supply shortages, and prices of energy sources such as natural gas, electricity, oil, and coal have surged dramatically.
Meanwhile, India is deeply mired in a coal shortage. Tight coal stockpiles have led to a sustained decline in power generation at thermal power plants across multiple Indian states. As of now, according to available information, 16 power plants in India have already been forced to shut down due to the coal shortage. Data released by the Central Electricity Authority of India on October 10 showed that among India’s 135 major coal-fired power plants, 115 are facing a critical situation with coal stocks. Nearly half of these plants have coal reserves that can last for fewer than four days—while normally, Indian coal-fired power companies routinely maintain coal stocks sufficient for more than 15 days.
Affected by the energy crisis, European aluminum plants have already begun to cut or halt production. The sharp rise in energy costs has placed an unbearable burden on aluminum companies. According to reports, Dutch aluminum companies now face electricity costs of up to 4,500 euros per ton of aluminum, while German aluminum companies are experiencing electricity costs exceeding 4,000 US dollars—far surpassing aluminum prices. Although Indian aluminum companies have not yet announced production cuts, the risk of power restrictions and reduced output due to coal shortages continues to rise.
As of now, over 100,000 tons of aluminum smelting capacity overseas have been reduced due to the energy crisis, with most of this reduction concentrated in Europe. The scale of production cuts is expected to expand further.
