Information Summary:
Today is the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month in the Year of the Ox—the last major traditional festival of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Legend has it that Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, to celebrate Zhou Bo’s successful suppression of the Lü Rebellion on the 15th day of the first lunar month, would invariably leave the palace each year on this night to stroll among the people and share their joy. In ancient times, “night” was also referred to as “xiao,” and the first lunar month was known as “yuan yue.” Thus, Emperor Wen of the Han designated the 15th day of the first lunar month as the Lantern Festival, and the night itself came to be called “yuan xiao.”
