This year, the Great Cold and Laba Festival fall on the same day—probably to bring warmth to people’s hearts with a steaming bowl of Laba porridge during the chilly Great Cold season.

Da Han is the last of the twenty-four solar terms. Once Da Han has passed, a new cycle begins—just as the saying goes, "Winter gives way to spring."

The Laba Festival is one of Buddhism’s grand festivals. Originally a Buddhist holiday, it gradually evolved over the ages into a well-known folk festival cherished by every household.

On Laba Day, some regions in China have the custom of drinking Laba porridge. Although the ingredients used in Laba porridge vary from region to region, it generally includes grains such as rice, millet, glutinous rice, sorghum, black rice, and coix seed; beans such as yellow soybeans, red beans, mung beans, kidney beans, and yardlong beans; and dried fruits including jujubes, peanuts, lotus seeds, goji berries, chestnuts, walnut kernels, almonds, longan, raisins, and ginkgo nuts. Laba porridge is also known as "Seven Treasures and Five-Flavor Porridge." The tradition of drinking Laba porridge in China dates back over a thousand years. It first emerged during the Song Dynasty, and by the Qing Dynasty, the custom had become even more widespread. On Laba Day each year, whether it was the imperial court, government offices, temples, or ordinary households, everyone would prepare Laba porridge.
