In early June, the feasibility study report for Lanzhou Petrochemical’s 250,000-ton-per-year needle coke project successfully passed the initial review and assessment by China National Petroleum Corporation’s New Materials & Refining & Chemicals Company, marking a new milestone in the project’s progress. The needle coke project is a major initiative undertaken by Lanzhou Petrochemical to “reduce oil consumption and increase specialty products,” thereby implementing the company’s strategy for high-quality development.

Needle coke is truly the “crown jewel” of the new materials industry. It is widely used in metallurgy, chemical engineering, lithium-ion batteries, new energy, aerospace, and other industries, and is one of the indispensable key resources for strategic emerging industries.

Lanzhou Petrochemical is closely monitoring market demand, proactively seizing opportunities, and accelerating the research efforts on the needle coke project. In line with the “Petroleum Coke Business Development Plan” prepared by the China National Petroleum Planning Institute, Lanzhou Petrochemical has conducted thorough research and feasibility studies on surrounding markets, coordinated the utilization of residual oil resources from western refineries such as Changqing Petrochemical and Qingyang Petrochemical, and is speeding up the development of a centralized processing and production facility for needle coke. Meanwhile, it has commissioned qualified design institutes to efficiently prepare the feasibility study reports and is coordinating closely with the New Materials Division of the refining and chemical sector, organizing a preliminary review of the project.

At the review meeting, the design institute delivered a detailed report on the feasibility study. Experts from the three major disciplines—process, engineering, and economics—held group discussions and formulated their review comments, agreeing to pass the initial assessment of the project. Moving forward, Lanzhou Petrochemical will further refine and improve the feasibility study report in collaboration with the design institute, taking into account the feedback from the review experts and the refining and petrochemical sector, thereby accelerating the project’s implementation and opening up new avenues for high-quality development.
