Information Summary:

Half of the first quarter of 2022 has already passed. As the supply-demand imbalance in the domestic low-sulfur coke market intensifies, prices for low-sulfur petroleum coke have continued to rise, reaching historic highs in recent years and driving up the prices of calcined petroleum coke as a carbon additive.

Half of the first quarter of 2022 has already passed. As the supply-demand imbalance in the domestic low-sulfur coke market intensifies, prices for low-sulfur petroleum coke have continued to rise, reaching historic highs in recent years and driving up the prices of calcined coke-based carbon additives.

Figure 1: Price Trend Chart for Various Grades of Petroleum Coke

Starting from the first quarter, the domestic low-sulfur coke market has seen a tight supply situation. Coupled with strong purchasing enthusiasm on the demand side, the imbalance between supply and demand has intensified, driving continuous price increases for low-sulfur coke. In Northeast China, the quoted price for high-quality low-sulfur coke stands at 6,900–7,000 yuan per ton, up 700 yuan per ton from the beginning of the year—a rise of approximately 11.29%. The price for ordinary-quality low-sulfur coke is 5,600 yuan per ton, also up 700 yuan per ton from the start of the year, representing an increase of about 14.28%.

Figure 2: Trend Chart of Market Prices for Carbon Additives

As shown in the figure, the market price of post-calcination carbon additives has risen significantly and is currently at a high level, even surpassing the market price of graphitized carbon additives. The quoted price for post-calcination coke-based carbon additives ranges from 6,000 to 6,200 yuan per ton; the price for graphitized carbon additives is between 5,900 and 6,000 yuan per ton, while the price for 92C calcined coal-based carbon additives stands at 4,012 yuan per ton. The increase in raw material costs has led to a substantial rise in the prices of post-calcination coke-based carbon additives.

From the demand side, the current supply level in the steel market remains relatively low. Although some steel mills have already resumed production or plan to do so, the impact of factors such as the Winter Olympics, the subsequent Winter Paralympics, and the Two Sessions continues to limit the room for further increases. After the holiday period, the steel market initially rose but then fell sharply, dragging down the overall performance of black commodity futures. In the spot market, lacking support from actual demand, prices have largely been driven by speculative buying and selling—rising on thin air and falling just as quickly.

Overall, the rising cost of raw materials is driving continuous increases in the market price of calcined coke. Meanwhile, subdued market demand is putting even greater pressure on manufacturers and fueling bearish sentiment in the market. It is expected that the market price of calcined coke as a carbon additive will continue to rise in tandem with raw material costs, while at the same time, competitive pressures in the market will intensify further.
