The Origin of the Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival, also known as the Shangyuan Festival, Little New Year, Yuanxi, or Lantern Festival, falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month each year and is one of China’s traditional festivals. The first lunar month is called “Yuè” in the lunar calendar, and in ancient times, “night” was referred to as “xiāo.” Since the 15th day of the first lunar month marks the first full moon night of the year, it came to be known as the “Lantern Festival.”

Lantern Festival Customs

Eat tangyuan.

On the 15th day of the first lunar month, people eat yuanxiao. As a food item, yuanxiao has a long history in China. During the Song Dynasty, a novel delicacy enjoyed during the Lantern Festival was already popular among the common people. Lantern Festival

Lantern festivals are a traditional custom of the Lantern Festival, originating in the Western Han Dynasty and flourishing during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. After the Sui and Tang periods, the practice of lighting lanterns became popular across successive dynasties and has been passed down through the ages. Moreover, the 15th day of the first lunar month marks the peak of the annual lantern festival and fireworks display. That’s why the Lantern Festival is also known as the “Lantern Festival.” In these densely populated residential areas and bustling, lively districts, streets are adorned with lanterns before the 15th day of the first lunar month, creating a vibrant tapestry of colorful flowers and twinkling lights. The spectacle reaches its climax on the evening of the 15th day...

Guess the riddle on the lantern.

Guessing lantern riddles—also known as solving lantern puzzles or playing with lantern riddles—is a uniquely Chinese traditional folk entertainment activity imbued with national characteristics. It’s a special feature of the Lantern Festival that has been passed down since ancient times. Every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month, traditional folk customs include hanging colorful lanterns and setting off fireworks. Later, some well-meaning individuals began writing riddles on small slips of paper and pasting them onto these brilliantly colored lanterns for others to guess...
